You Are Not Your Business
Why does it feel so personal when your business struggles or succeeds? In this talk, Jody daSilva introduces the Pineapple & Profits concept: a fresh lens on why so many owners unconsciously fuse their personal identity with their business, and what that entanglement costs them. You'll take a close look at the "I am my business" mindset and the subtle self-talk ("I made $10k this month" instead of "the business generated $10k") that quietly reinforces the belief that you and your company are one and the same. You will recognize this pattern in your own thinking and understand why it's often the hidden root of overwork, burnout, and stalled growth. This is foundational for anyone ready to start seeing their business as its own entity: separate, capable, and built to thrive on its own. It is the beginning of becoming a leader in your business from what the business needs.
Learning Objectives
1) Your business is a separate entity — not an extension of you. Alicia's Organic Market can sell a pineapple; Alicia the person cannot. Recognizing this distinction is the first step toward treating your business as a living, breathing entity with its own purpose, systems, and future.
2) Catch the language that reveals the blur. Phrases like "I made $10k this month" or "I'm not good with money" signal that your identity and your business have fused. Learning to shift from "me/my" to "the business/its" is a practical, immediate way to start separating the two.
3) Blurred lines carry a real cost. When you can't tell where you end and the business begins, you undervalue your time, resist delegating, make emotional rather than strategic decisions, and burn out trying to do everything yourself — while missing the chance to build something that's truly an asset.
